In 2017, forest fires were devastating the area around Mount Vesuvius in Italy, and were drawing closer to the town of Ottaviano with every day that passed. Local authorities were already stretched, lacking the resources to fight the blaze alone. After asking the EU to coordinate a response, the town received help within hours.
